Classic case of Social Myopia - Our Cricket conundrum
I wanted to let the dust settle down when I start writing this piece as it is very important to get away from the frenzy and look at the big picture. Yes, I am talking about the cricket conundrum that initiated from a page 3 talk show. As usual we as a social unit use our best myopic judgement skills and focused on the person that said something in public rather than the system. He or she becomes the only dysfunctional character in our beautiful and moral social fabric. We also need to understand that the society is changing what was expected 20 years ago isnt the same today. If we keep Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, Dravid and many more as yardsticks on how our cricketers should behave we will always be dissatisfied.
If someone was listening to what Hardik and Rahul were talking about there was enough for them to be blamed for their own actions but there was also enough evidence of the widespread epidemic. Now when they talk about doing deeds in their hotel rooms and their mates accommodating who do you think is not involved. So the other players do not know? the Captain doesnt know? the coaching staff doesnt know? they have high security so their admin staff doesn't know?
Ridiculous as it may sound but when you read the endless banter on social media it seems no one else is involved lets crucify these two blokes and you have a moral and women respecting Indian cricket team. LOL
When you give millions of rupees to teenage kids, put them on a pedestal, surround them with glamour and glitz there are going to be issues. Most human beings get lost in such situations. The BCCI created IPL but is there a formal setup on counselling of these kids on how to handle success and money. When after parties are printed all over the social media then its fine but after effects are not.
How long will be hold these two as symbols of shame. They said things that they did without understanding the consequences. The most disgusting thing was that the editors, Star & Fox network and the show owners did not go back to them and say boys this is going to ruin your reputation think again. How in the game of TRPs we used two individuals as pawns. In no way am I condoning the actions but I am not comfortable symbolising them as whats wrong in our society. So many others share equal blame and need to stand-up and answer.
So what do we do. Block players from giving interviews? remove episodes from online platforms? Ban the duo for certain number of matches? again this is the most myopic call of action. You need to reform the grooming of our players both on how to handle success and decorum as well as how to manage media. Barring/blocking/banning has never had positive social reform. This is also true for any young kid who comes from simple/mundane background and lands up in the thick of things. They all need the right kind of guidance. Yes, there should be strict code of conduct on who is allowed to visit them when they are on tours for the country and what is expected conduct. As far as IPL goes lets just understand it is entertainment and not cricket. Actions there will be difficult to control and we need to educate rather than barricade.
Definitely would love to hear opinions that you all have.
